How Are We Supposed to Dress for Fall When It’s Still 95°??
Pumpkin spice is back. The stores are full of sweaters. Everyone on Instagram suddenly seems to be standing in a pile of crunchy leaves wearing boots, jeans and a cozy cardigan.
Meanwhile, here in Florida?
It’s 95 degrees.
We're sweating on the walk from the car to the front door, our iced coffee is melting faster than we can drink it, and putting on a chunky sweater sounds less like fashion and more like a medical emergency.
Welcome to fall in Florida.
For those of us in Parrish, Apollo Beach, Tampa Bay and the rest of the Sunshine State, figuring out what to wear in Florida in fall requires a slightly different strategy. We want the rich colors, cute trends and cozy feeling of a new season — we just don't necessarily want the temperature that normally comes with the clothes.
Luckily, you don't need cold weather to dress for fall.
The secret to Florida fall fashion is borrowing the colors, prints, textures and accessories of autumn while sticking with lightweight pieces that actually make sense when the forecast still starts with a 9.
Here's how we do fall at The Teal Turtle.
1. Think Fall Colors, Not Fall Fabrics
This might be the most important rule of dressing for fall in hot weather:
Change your colors before you change your fabrics.
You don't need a chunky sweater to make an outfit feel like fall.
Start moving away from summer's brightest shades and toward:
Olive • Maroon • Rust • Camel • Chocolate • Navy • Cream • Mustard • Deep Teal • Terracotta
A lightweight maroon or olive blouse instantly feels more seasonal, but you won't regret your fashion choices halfway across a Publix parking lot.
The same rule works for dresses. Look for deeper florals, paisleys, earthy neutrals and richer colors while keeping the fabric light and breathable.
Florida fall fashion is really about changing the mood of your wardrobe before changing the weight of it.

2. Yes, You Can Absolutely Wear Sleeveless Tops in Fall
Repeat after us:
October does not automatically require sleeves.
At least not around here.
Sleeveless tops and tanks are some of our favorite transitional pieces because they can look completely different depending on how you style them.
Take a simple black tank and add dark denim, gold jewelry and a neutral handbag. Suddenly, something you could have worn in July looks perfectly appropriate for September or October.

This is exactly the kind of piece that earns its place in a Florida closet because it doesn't belong to just one season.
Wear it now with cropped denim and sandals. Later, add a cardigan, blazer or denim jacket when Florida finally decides to participate in fall.

3. Bring Back the Denim — Strategically
Ahhh, denim season.
We missed you.
There's just one tiny problem.
Florida hasn't received the memo yet.
Instead of jumping immediately into heavy jeans every day, gradually bring denim back into your wardrobe.
Try:
- Cropped jeans
- Ankle-length denim
- Relaxed boyfriend jeans
- Wide-leg denim
- Lightweight jeans
- Denim shorts with a fall-colored top
And can we finally stop pretending white jeans disappear after Labor Day?
We live in Florida. White denim gets an extended season.
Pair white denim with olive, maroon, camel, navy or chocolate and it instantly looks more autumnal.
For traditional blue denim, darker washes are especially good for transitioning into fall.
TRY A DARKER WASH
A relaxed dark-indigo jean like the Billie Boyfriend Jean in Dark Cozy Indigo by Judy Blue gives an outfit that fall feeling without adding layers.
Pair it with a lightweight top now and save the sweater for the first actual cold front.

4. Olive Might Be Florida Fall's Best Friend
If there's one color that can take an outfit from summer to fall almost instantly, we're giving the award to olive green.
It looks great with denim, cream, black, camel and gold accessories — and, most importantly, it doesn't require sleeves.

The Lizzy Top in Olive by Dear Scarlett
This is basically our Florida-fall formula in one piece: a rich autumn color in a silhouette that still makes sense when it's hot outside.
Pair it with jeans and sandals now, then add a jacket or cardigan when temperatures eventually cooperate.

5. Don't Say Goodbye to Florals — Just Make Them Moodier
Florals aren't only for spring and summer.
The difference between a summer floral and a fall floral often has much less to do with the actual flowers and much more to do with the color palette surrounding them.
For warm-weather fall outfits, look for florals featuring deeper reds, burgundy, olive, black, navy, rust and earthy neutrals.
You still get the lightweight, feminine feel of a floral top without looking like you're headed to a Fourth of July picnic.

6. The Florida Fall Dress May Be the Real MVP
If there's one category that makes dressing for Florida fall ridiculously easy, it's the dress.
One piece. Minimal effort. Maximum airflow.
That's a win.
The trick is choosing dresses that look like fall without necessarily feeling like fall.
Instead of tropical summer brights, look for:
Moody florals • Navy • Burgundy • Olive • Rust • Animal prints • Earth tones • Deeper blues and greens
Wear your dress with sandals while it's hot.
Then, on that glorious Florida morning when you walk outside and the temperature starts with a 6, add a denim jacket or lightweight cardigan.
Same dress.
Completely different season.
7. Accessories Are Your Secret Weapon
Want your outfit to look more like October without adding another layer?
Change your accessories.
This may be the easiest Florida fall fashion trick of all.
Think:
Gold jewelry • Tortoiseshell • Camel • Cognac • Chocolate brown • Natural textures • Animal prints • Deeper handbags
Even changing your handbag can completely shift an outfit.
A breezy dress with a straw beach tote says July.
The same dress with a camel or chocolate crossbody?
Hello, October.
The Teal Turtle carries plenty of handbags and accessories that can help make the transition without changing your entire wardrobe.
8. Sandals Aren't Going Anywhere Yet
We need to discuss the elephant in the room.
Boot season in Florida is...complicated.
Can you wear boots in September?
Technically, yes.
Will you question that decision while crossing a parking lot at 2 p.m.?
Also yes.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing sandals and wedges well into fall. Instead of switching immediately to closed-toe shoes, transition the color of your footwear.
Move toward:
Caramel • Cognac • Tan • Brown • Cream • Neutral
A caramel wedge with jeans and an olive or maroon top looks completely fall appropriate without asking your feet to pretend it's November in Michigan.
9. Master the Florida "Air-Conditioning Layer"
Every Florida woman knows this outfit dilemma.
Outside: 95°.
Restaurant: Apparently 42°.
This is why lightweight layering pieces aren't just cute — they're survival equipment.
Keep a lightweight cardigan, denim jacket, soft wrap, kimono or blazer nearby.
You might not need it walking into dinner, but there's a very good chance you'll be wearing it before the appetizers arrive.
A light layer also lets you introduce a little more fall style without committing to a full cold-weather outfit.
And when that layer inevitably comes off the second you walk outside?
Your outfit underneath still works.

Dress for the Season — AND the Weather
By August, most of us are emotionally ready for fall.
We want football. Pumpkin patches. Fall candles. Boots. Sweaters. Maybe even a morning when stepping outside doesn't feel like opening the dishwasher halfway through the dry cycle.
But great style still has to work in real life.
There's no prize for being the first woman in Parrish wearing a cable-knit sweater when the heat index is hovering around triple digits.
Florida fall style isn't about pretending it's cold. It's about bringing the feeling of fall into clothes that still make sense for our climate.
Choose breathable pieces.
Introduce richer colors.
Bring your denim back gradually.
Change your accessories.
Keep wearing the sandals.
And layer when Mother Nature finally gives you permission.
Fall Fashion at The Teal Turtle Boutique
One of the reasons we love buying for our Florida customers is simple:
We live here too.
We're not choosing a fall collection assuming September automatically means crisp, 60-degree afternoons.
We know September can feel like July.
We know October can still be beach weather.
And we know the perfect Florida fall outfit needs to give us all the autumn feels without giving us heat exhaustion.
That's why you'll find lightweight tops, dresses, Judy Blue denim, transitional layers, handbags, shoes and accessories that let you dress for the season and the temperature.
Visit us at The Teal Turtle Boutique in Parrish or Apollo Beach, Florida, or shop online from wherever you call home.
Because around here, fall isn't necessarily a temperature.
It's a vibe.
And we're dressing for it anyway. 🍂🐢
